Re: Handle?
Wed, December 29, 2004 - 3:59 PMMy handle was Stingray. I called POPnet starting around 1989 or 1990 until it went down. I was on lifeline.
And one time, I totally beat Robby at Othello.

Re: Handle?
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 1:35 PMHahahhhh!
Long time no see, Six! Where've you been? Whatcha been up to? -
-
Re: Handle?
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 6:32 PMWell.. let's see... Still in the Bay Area, bought a house in Castro Valley. I worked at Maxis/EA for 7 or so years, lost some hair, gained some pounds, then went to Palm (the handheld guys) for a few more years... Now I'm working in San Francisco at a place called PirateGames. It's all good.
Not much else to tell... Cool running into you lot here, there's a few folks I never thought I'd hear from again - very cool! The world's getting smaller every day. -

Re: Handle?
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 7:59 PMHey Six,

Re: Handle?
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 9:16 PMNot in a year or so... PirateGames is a startup so I've been working the long hours and have no time for such indulgences :) If someone else wants to organize one, they're more than welcome - I hardly own the idea of getting together for drinks and chatter. -

Nah, I don't fold, spindle and mutilate like I used to.
Heck, I hardly even fondle the system any more.
<waxing nostalgic>
Sure had some interesting times in the early days, though...

Thipdar (handle still in use after 21 years)

Re: Handle?
Sun, June 8, 2008 - 11:32 PMI was registered as Asterix the Gaul. Actually, for much of 1985/1986, I was on all the time as a guest. Couldn't afford the steep rates! Then I finally handed Her Maj the $20 or whatever at one of the parties, and was officially not the longest-term guest. She even put that in the welcome page the next day. Shortly thereafter I drifted away from online gaming/chatting and really haven't come back...

Re: Handle?
Wed, August 27, 2008 - 2:05 PMI was (and still am) using the nick "The Yipper".
Still living in the Bay Area, worked at Round Table Pizza in Castro Valley in the early 1990's.
I then was a guitar technician for a couple of metal bands (Testament and Soulfly) in 1997-1998.
Returned to computers and was a QA tester/SQA engineer.
Currently guitar tech'ing for the local Bay Area 90's metal band "Forbidden". -

Re: Handle?
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 2:06 PMI had life line.
Roxy was my first handle.
Purl was one.
I think I was that bomb - Bomb # 19?? - from that movie once.
And I'm sure there were more.
One time we (and I don't know who we was) broke into the popnet office and changed a bunch of peoples handles. :) Robby was pretty darn pissed! -
-
Re: Handle?
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 8:40 PMThat was not me.
The time that I changed handles around, I had a key to the office and was also 'babysitting' the system.
I think I was the first one to notice that I could change a regular User's handle to be "POPnet" (with an embedded Ctrl-G), and thus counterfeit 'system messages' to other Users.
Rax was the only person that spotted the fraud immediately - it was because he'd written his own terminal software which displayed the Control characters instead of acting on them.
In order to confuse things even more, I handed that "POPnet" account off to an accomplice (and I still refuse to say who that was) who used it to play with the other Users. Meanwhile, I was online as "SysopProTem", helping the accomplice to wreck havock on the Users.
Remember getting bumped out if someone else used your access code & password? The accomplice would see someone log in, then he'd send them a counterfeit "system" message that they'de just logged in. When they saw the second login message, they'd have a moment of panic, waiting for the system to bump them out - while wondering "Who's got my password???". Then they WOULDN'T get bumped out, and they'd be really confused.
The acomplice sent messages like "(POPnet)Striptease has logged on", and guys would jump to chat with this 'interesting' new User - only "Striptease" wasn't even in the system, in fact the name wasn't even registered.
I don't fold, spindle or murilate like I used to. But those were some fun times! -

Cool to see so many names I haven't seen in so long. Long live the POPnet parties! I actually recently moved near where Mountain Mikes used to be in Dublin. Its now Lucky's pizza and looks a little different inside... -
